This room has a special place in my heart because it’s the formal sitting room in our home. It’s the room that most appealed to me when we first inspected the house four years ago. At the time it was shrouded in dark green curtains, dirty carpet and drab paint but there was something about the proportions and the light that appealed to me and it has the most beautiful outlook over pleached Michelia trees and the swimming pool. (I didn’t grow up with a swimming pool so this is a huge luxury for me!)
We didn’t have a big budget for renovating so we were lucky enough that this sitting room didn’t require much work. A coat of vivid white paint and some black carpet was a great improvement and once I added the zebra striped deco lounge suite and the room starting coming to life.
I flanked the couch with a matching pair of Venetian mirrors to reflect the view of the pool and I fell in love the Ralph Lauren style mirror which takes pride of place over the marble fireplace because it’s so unique and it throws light in all different directions depending on the time of day.
The Louis 16th occasional chairs were the next addition and I upholstered them with some leopard print velvet because I love leopard skin and all things animal print! The side tables were cheap as chips but I love them – the little mirrored circles match the crystal balls in the lamp bases and again, reflect the light in so many different directions.
This room is a favourite of mine because it feels so warm and inviting. During the day it’s where I go to sit quietly and enjoy the view which bounces off the coffee tables and at night it’s just as cosy – the leopard skin lamp shades ensure a gentle glow or I can amp it up with the gorgeous chandelier which I found in an opportunity shop for $100!
